In 2010, I wrote up instructions and took pictures of how I make a rug for a series on Day to Day Adventures. That series has been extremely popular
So I took all the posts in that series plus some new information and Rags to Rugs was born.
I've added more details and even filmed a video recently about how to join fabric without sewing. All of it was a fun new adventure with helping others to create rag rugs.
When you make a rag rug it is important to know how to join fabric so you can add fabric strips for the rag rug rows! This is an easy task!
Are you just starting a rug? Or maybe you want to learn how? I’ve got you covered with my rag rug ebook OR the rag rug video course. But make sure you grab the free supply list!
This week I finally got my new rag rug project started. I have so many reasons for making rugs but it’s hard carving out time to be creative.
I like to prep my fabric strips in batches so when I have time to work on my rug this part is already done. It’s also an easy task to do when I have 5 minutes of free time. Plus a little progress is a good thing!
To start a rug I need fabric strips and it takes a lot of fabric to make a rug! Luckily I know some secrets to finding cheap fabric. I make strips by ripping the fabric into appropriate widths for the rug.
Decide on size of the rug and make the center or base of the rug. Then its time to start adding strips as the rug gets bigger with each knot.
Did you know that you can join fabric with just two holes? You can also use it for banners or making rope for other crafts. It is super easy! This method is key to rug making.
Here is a video SHOWING how to join fabric without sewing! This was WAY more fun than taking a bazillion pictures and writing out instructions. (Plus that is exactly what is in the ebook!)
That's it!
Joining fabric strips is not hard at all but it is essential to making a rug. I like this method because I don't need a needle or thread and these knots are pretty indestructible once they are part of the rug.
You can get the ad-free, printable .pdf for easy to follow instructions that you can take with you anywhere for just $7.50. OR click the graphic below to get the video course to SEE exactly how to make the stitches, change fabric colors and ALL the steps!

It always amazes me how much fabric I need to make a rag rug.
After steadily cutting up jeans and making strips this week I have several piles ready so that I can start my rug next week.
Thankfully the jeans are free. I’ve saved jeans from all of my kids, myself & husband for a few years. I have no idea if I have enough or not.
